Blog 3: The wind that shakes de barley

"The wind that shakes de barley" is a film directed by Ken Loach and it is about the irish independance war against the british in 1919. It is narrated by the irish point of view and it goes from de war between them and the britsh until the beging of the Irish civil war.

I liked the movie, because it keeps you interested throught the whole story. It presents the main caracters and their personalities really good. It explains the history of the country and it reflects the pasion of the will for freedom and independance. I really liked how at the end the story turns around. The person who watches the film can feel the anger of the betrayal between the characters. How in the beging they all fight together, side by side, and how they end killing each other.

My favorite character is Damien. Not only because he is one of the main characters and we get to know more about his personality, but because he keeps faithful to his beliefs. He stays strong, and doesn't let the "Free State" take over his first objective: the complete freedom of Irland.

One part I liked about the film was that, eventhough, we can see the betrayal between Irish, I liked how the film doesn´t take part in one side only. We relate more with the character of Damien, but we can see Teddy crying after his death. If the film didn´t want to show both parts, that scene would have been stopped when Damien died. On the other hand, I didn´t like how the showed the tortures and suffering of the Irish. When the british tortured Teddy by taking off his fingernails. But this makes us fell what they are feeling.

My favorite scene was when all the Irish people were discusing about what to do with the truce. There we can see all the different opinions and perspectives of the conflict. There we could see the real loyalty to the real freedom of Irland.

I really recomend this movie if you like stories based on historical events, and if not it is a well made movie.

  1. For what I saw, Damien is the favorite character of all of us. I just love him, and I loved Cillian Murphy in the role.
